Tried to save money on a new roof and ended up paying double

I was in my backyard in Austin last July and decided to patch a leak myself instead of calling a roofer. Got on the ladder with a tube of Henry's and didn't realize the old shingles were brittle as heck. Ended up cracking three more spots and had to pay a crew $800 to fix everything the next day. Anyone else ever try a quick fix and just make it way worse?

$800 is not that bad honestly. I've seen people do way worse with DIY roofing, like the guy who thought he could just tar over everything and ended up with a pond on his roof. You learned a lesson about brittle shingles which is pretty standard knowledge for anyone who's lived in a hot climate for more than a decade. July in Austin, you were asking for trouble working up there anyway.

Wait, did you say he tried to tar a whole roof and ended up with a pond on top? That's genuinely insane. Like, how do you even mess up that badly?
