Blew my camera sensor clean, then saved the shot anyway

Last Saturday I drove out to Cherry Springs for the Perseids, set up my DSLR on a fresh battery, and within 20 minutes the shutter started sticking. Turns out the cold got to the lubricant, so every third frame came out blank. I ended up hand-holding the camera for 40-second exposures, bracing my elbows on a cooler, and relying on the 2-second timer to cut shake. Out of 60 frames, maybe 10 were sharp, but one caught a fireball right over the treeline. That single frame made the whole trip worth it. Has anyone else salvaged a night with a busted mount or rig, or am I just stubborn?.
