Can we talk about trying to get a clean shot of the Orion Nebula?

I spent like 3 hours last night fighting with my camera's ISO settings and stacking software just to get the colors right. Anyone have a good guide for processing M42 with a basic DSLR?

My buddy swears by shooting at ISO 800 and just taking way more short exposures to control the noise.

But that's like a thousand shots, man.

Honestly, the whole ISO debate makes my head spin. I tried that high ISO method once and ended up with a bright pink blob that looked nothing like space. Gray_roberts has a point about more short shots, but man, that eats up memory cards so fast. My best results came from just taking it outside the city and forgetting half the settings. Sometimes you just gotta point and shoot and fix the mess later in the free software.
