Debate: Are stacked galaxy images actually hiding detail or just making things prettier?

I keep seeing folks stack dozens of exposures of the same galaxy to get this super smooth look, but I think it's killing the faint dust lanes and star clusters. I compared a single 10-minute shot of M31 to a 20-frame stack last night, and the single frame showed way more texture in the dark patches. Which side are you on - stacking for aesthetics or single frames for raw detail?

I read somewhere that single frames actually catch more of the faint stuff because stacking smooths out the real noise, man.

That M31 comparison you did is interesting man but I think you might be overthinking it. @casey843 has a point about noise smoothing but a 20 frame stack of Andromeda at 60 seconds each is going to show way more of the outer spiral arms than any single shot can. The dust lanes thing depends on your processing too you can always pull those back with curves if you know what you're doing. Honestly stacking vs single frames is like comparing apples to oranges for different purposes you want raw data grab a single sub but for a final image nobody wants to see noisy grain. It's not really that serious just pick what works for your setup and move on.
