Had to choose between a $400 lens for the Milky Way or fixing my truck's brakes

I was saving for a new astro lens, but my old Ford's brakes started grinding last week. I picked the brakes, obviously, and then tried to shoot the Perseids with my basic kit lens anyway. Has anyone else gotten a decent deep sky shot without the fancy gear?

Honestly, that's the real astrophotography. My best shot of Orion was with a tripod and a fifty dollar manual lens.

What kind of manual lens was it? I've got an old Pentax 50mm that's surprisingly sharp for stars. Did you have to fight with the focus a lot at night?
