Last week I finally saw the Orion Nebula through my own telescope after 6 years of just looking at photos online
Borrowed a neighbor's 8-inch dob in Portland last Thursday and that fuzzy smudge in the viewfinder looked way more real than any Hubble image, has anyone else been surprised by how different things look through a lens vs a screen?

Read somewhere that your brain processes a real-time view different than a photo. Something about the light hitting your eye directly. Makes sense. I saw Jupiter through a cheap scope once. Just a tiny white dot with lines. But seeing those bands form in real time, in my own eye, felt completely different. Photos are too perfect. Real telescopes show you the imperfect truth. That fuzzy smudge carries more weight than any crystal clear image.

Do you think that's why people get so hooked on live viewing? I had the same thing with Saturn's rings through a friend's old reflector. The image was tiny and wobbly, every time the wind blew it turned into a blur. But I sat there for like 20 minutes just watching it drift across the lens. Photos from Hubble look fake almost, too clean. That cheap scope showed me a real planet wobbling in space and it felt huge in a way a perfect picture never does.
