My brother said to just use my phone for astro photos...
He told me to forget buying a real camera and just get a good app for my phone, so I spent $15 on one and tried it from my backyard last night. The shots of Orion were just a blurry, noisy mess and I'm pretty sure I missed a decent meteor streak because of the lag. What's the cheapest actual camera setup that can actually capture something besides a bright dot?

My old Canon T3i from a pawn shop was my real start, cost less than a used game console. You need that bigger sensor to soak up light without turning everything into grainy mush. Pair it with the basic 18-55mm kit lens, set it wide open on a tripod, and you'll actually see the belt stars in Orion. Phone apps just can't collect enough light, no matter how much you spend on them.

Hell yeah, that's the move right there. I grabbed a T2i off Craigslist and did the same thing, kit lens and all. Once you stack those shots in free software, the detail just pops out.
