My neighbor's $2,000 telescope takes better photos than the Hubble deep field image he printed

I was at a star party last week and this retiree named Frank told me he spends more on eyepieces than most people spend on their cars. He showed me a shot of the Andromeda Galaxy he took from his backyard in Phoenix. It had more detail than the posters I used to buy from the science museum. Made me wonder if all those fancy space telescope images we see are just public relations. Has anyone else looked through a really good amateur setup and felt like the pros are holding back?

Did Frank tell you about the light pollution filters he runs? A buddy of mine in Tucson has a rig that makes the city glow disappear entirely, and his Jupiter shots look like they came from a probe.
