Pointed my DSLR at the moon with a 300mm lens and the shots came out way sharper at f/11 than wide open

Spent about 90 minutes on my back porch in Boise testing apertures on a tripod, and every single f/5.6 frame was softer than the f/11 ones, so has anyone else noticed their lens sweet spot lands way higher than they expected for lunar shots?
