Watching the Perseids from my apartment roof in Phoenix last August

I was just snapping pics with my phone, but a guy with a real camera let me peek through his lens and the difference was insane. Anyone got tips for a cheap starter DSLR that's decent for night stuff?

Check out a used Canon T3i. The kit lens is okay but you'll want a fast prime for night shots.

My friend bought one, exactly like @the_betty said.

@simon_sanchez58 I'm going to disagree a bit. The T3i is getting old now and the kit lens is honestly better for learning composition than jumping straight to a prime. You miss out on figuring out framing and zoom at night is tough anyway even with a fast lens unless you're shooting still subjects. Better to start with a newer body like a used T6i or even a mirrorless like an older Sony A6000.
