I ignored my roofer's advice on gutters for 2 years
Back when I bought my house in East Atlanta, my roofer told me to install leaf guards on all the gutters. I thought it was just a upsell and figured I'd clean them myself every fall. Fast forward to last spring, I had water damage in my basement from clogged gutters overflowing during a bad storm. Cost me about $800 to fix the foundation cracks and dry out the carpet. Has anyone else had a contractor give advice that seemed unnecessary but turned out to be right?

Yeah I ignored my roofer's advice on gutters too and now my gutters are basically planters for trees.

My neighbor actually had the opposite problem. He installed gutter guards right away and then a squirrel chewed through the plastic ones to build a nest in his downspout. Took him 3 months and a professional gutter guy to figure out why water was pouring over the side during rainstorms. Cost him like $400 just to get the nest removed and replace the guards with metal ones. Seems like gutters are just cursed no matter what you do honestly.
