Pro tip: Check your gutters before August storms hit

I ran into a guy named Dave at the Home Depot on Memorial Drive last spring who said he'd ignored his gutters for 2 years. His foundation took on water after a big storm in July and he ended up paying $3,800 for a French drain install. Has anyone else had a close call with gutter neglect around here?

My own gutters were so full of leaves last fall that I actually had a small maple tree sprouting out of one of them... I'm not kidding, it was like a foot tall. My neighbor saw me up on the ladder pulling it out and just shook his head at me. I figure if I keep ignoring them long enough, maybe I can start a little urban forest on my roof.
