My compressor died during the June heatwave and I got quotes from two local companies, one was $8,400 and the other was $5,900 for the same SEER rating. The cheap guy had a longer wait time but did a thorough load calculation, while the expensive one just looked at the old unit's size. Has anyone else found that the second quote caught something the first missed entirely?

Did you ask them to break down what that extra money was actually going toward? I always tell folks to get the itemized parts and labor list, that's where the duct work or line set surprises show up.
