Showerthought: I think tearing down old homes in Kirkwood is a mistake, and my neighbor made me say it out loud
I was out front with a hose last Saturday when a guy walked by and asked if we were the ones fighting the demo permit two doors down. I said yeah, and he goes on this whole rant about how any old house is just a tear down waiting to happen and newer builds are better for the neighborhood. He was polite the whole time, but he kept saying the same thing over and over, that old pipes and small closets are just problems you inherit. I stood there with the hose still running and realized he wasn't wrong about the pipes, but he was missing why people actually live here. Has anyone else had a neighbor push new builds on you? I want to hear how you handled it without it turning into a thing.
Plumbing and closets are fixable. What you can't fix is what happened to the lots next door. Tear down one old house, fine. But then the new build sells for double, the next owner sees dollar signs, and pretty soon three houses on the block are gone. Then the trees go with them because the new footprints eat the whole yard. The guy walking by wasn't wrong about the pipes, he just doesn't see that the pipes aren't the point. Once the block loses enough of its old houses, nobody walking by it stops to talk to you at all.
