Warning: My AC unit died in the middle of a 95 degree July day in Decatur
Came home last Tuesday and the house was 88 degrees inside. That old Rheem unit finally gave out after 14 years. I called three HVAC companies and got quotes from $4,500 to $6,800 for a replacement. Ended up going with a mid-range Trane from a local guy who did the whole install in one day. Still stings to drop that much cash but at least I won't melt this summer. Anyone else had to replace their HVAC recently and feel like prices have gone insane?

Did you factor in your time and the risk of messing up? DIY sounds cheaper but one wrong wire and you're buying a whole new system plus paying for emergency service.

Spent the whole day Saturday swapping out my own unit after watching a dozen YouTube videos. Found a Goodman for $2,800 at a supply house but then realized they changed the refrigerant lines and had to buy a whole new coil setup too. Ended up with a few extra parts and a lot of sweat on the ground, but it kicked on and hasn't blown hot air yet. You ever try fixing one of these things yourself or is that just asking for trouble?
