Hot take: I used to think stud finders were useless. Now I won't touch a wall without one.

Back when I started riding trails and building my own ramps, I'd just eyeball it and hope I hit a stud. That worked fine for about 2 years until I hung a heavy cargo rack and it ripped clean out of the drywall. I switched to a decent stud finder after that, a basic $25 one from Home Depot. Now I check every time I mount anything, from a winch bracket to a new shelf in the garage. Has anyone else had a project fail because they skipped the basics?

Did you ever figure out why you thought stud finders were useless in the first place? I feel like a lot of guys get burned by cheap, inaccurate ones that beep for no reason, then swear off them forever. My first stud finder was a piece of junk that went off on old wiring, so I get the frustration. But a halfway decent one really does save you from patching drywall and re-hanging stuff.

Is it possible some people rely too much on the depth adjustment and forget they're supposed to push the thing flat against the wall? I've seen guys try to use one while holding it at an angle, and it just goes crazy. Maybe it's just me, but that seems like a common way to get false readings.
