Just realized my old 2-stroke sled was costing me more than a new 4-stroke would

I had to choose between dumping another $1500 into my '98 Polaris 500 or just buying a used Yamaha Phazer. I went with the Phazer and it's been way more reliable on the trails up near Houghton. Anyone else make that switch and find they actually saved money?

It depends on what you call saving money. The up front cost for a newer sled is still a big hit, even if it breaks down less. My old sled is cheap to fix myself, so I stick with it.

Totally get that. I read an article about the "sweat equity" factor with old machines. It argued your time fixing it has real value too, which a lot of people forget. Makes the math way more personal.

Yeah thats a good point. I see that same thing all over not just with sleds. Like my buddy spends hours fixing up his old truck but if you added up his time he'd be better off buying a used Tacoma. But his truck is his thing you know? People value their own labor differently than paying someone else. Its like the time you put in makes the thing feel more like yours.
