Question about running a snowmobile on old gas from 3 years ago in Montana

Everyone said it would wreck the engine, but I fired up my 2012 Ski-Doo last month on fuel that sat since 2021 and it ran fine after a carb clean. Has anyone else had this happen or did I just get lucky?

Remember my buddy's old Polaris that sat behind his shed? He tried starting it on two year old gas and it actually ran, but it smoked like a campfire and smelled like rotten varnish. It made it about a mile down the trail before it started sputtering and died. We had to drain the whole system and the fuel filter was just sludge.

Used to think old gas was fine until my mower did the same thing.
