Rant: Got my sled stuck in a bog north of Ely last weekend

Was riding on a frozen creek near Ely and broke through into a hidden spring underneath. Had to hike 2 miles to get cell service to call for a tow, which cost me $300. Anyone else deal with hidden water traps this time of year?

...and honestly man I think that might not have been a spring. Up here the ground stays frozen deeper than people realize even into late spring, so what you hit was probably a meltwater pocket sitting on top of the permafrost layer. Those are super common once the snow starts going and they look solid from the top because the ice is still thick enough to ride on, but underneath it's just slush and water. I had the same thing happen two years ago on a trail I'd ridden a dozen times before, never even crossed my mind that a spot could just open up like that.

@alex_taylor10 did you check the ground temp before you went out on it?
