See, @abby_chen, I kind of disagree here. Not all old-timer advice is gold. My grandpa swore by putting a brick in the toilet tank to save water, but that just wrecked the fill valve and cost me way more to fix. And with engines, running things bone-dry sounds smart until you forget and the rubber seals dry out and crack, then you've got a leak. The real trick is knowing which advice is actually based on mechanics and which is just a guy who got lucky once. That Wyoming guy got it right, sure, but for every one of him there's ten others telling you to pour Coke on your battery terminals.

That's such a good example of listening to the weird old-timer advice that turns out to be totally right. Happens with so much stuff, like car maintenance or gardening tricks. The simple fix is usually the one that sounds a little nuts at first.

Totally agree with you @abby_chen, it's a real pattern. I see it with cooking all the time, like using mayonnaise to make a grilled cheese extra crispy instead of butter. Sounds wrong but works perfectly. We're trained to look for complex solutions now, so the simple, weird trick feels silly until you try it. It makes me wonder what other easy fixes we're ignoring because they sound too simple.
