Stuck my sled in 4 feet of powder near Ely, Minnesota yesterday

I was trying to cut a fresh line across an open meadow off the main trail and hit a drift that just swallowed the front end completely. The ski was buried so deep I couldn't even rock it loose. Had to dig out for like 45 minutes with just my hands because I left my shovel strapped to the back of my buddy's machine. Finally got it free by packing snow under the track and winching off a tree with my tow strap. Anyone else ever get humbled by a snowy meadow that looked flat but wasn't?

Respectfully, that wasn't getting humbled. That was getting a good lesson in preparation. Leaving your shovel on your buddy's machine was the real mistake, not the meadow itself. Flat meadows always have hidden dips and drifts, that's just part of the fun. Packing snow under the track and winching off a tree is smart though, I'll give you that. But next time, keep your shovel on your own sled.

Yeah, I once dug my own sled out so long I forgot what snow looked like by the time I was done.
