That buddy who told me to grease my skis every 50 miles - he was dead on

My friend Dave from the Snowmobile club in Marquette kept telling me to lube my skis after every 50 miles. I thought he was just being anal about maintenance. Last weekend I went on a 200 mile loop up near Big Bay and halfway through the steering got all heavy and stiff. By the time I got back the ski bushings were totally shot. Cost me $180 in parts to fix plus a whole Saturday. Anybody else learn the hard way that a little maintenance goes a long way?

Ha, nothing like learning the expensive way. I guess Dave's "anal about maintenance" was just trying to save you 180 bucks and a Saturday.

Well that stinks, but at least you know now. So tell me this - did Dave ever actually show you what happens when you run those bushings dry, or was he just one of those guys who says "trust me" and you had to learn the hard way? I've found with these older sleds especially, the steering gets notchy way before it locks up, but most folks ignore it until they're stranded. What kind of grease were you using once you finally did it, or did you just grab whatever was in the garage? I ask because I've seen guys use the wrong stuff and it just cakes up worse than running dry in some conditions.
