Took me 4 hours to find a loose ground wire on my 2004 Polaris 500, all because of a dumb habit
Last Saturday I was getting my 2004 Polaris Sportsman 500 ready for a ride up near Hayward and it would not start, just cranked and cranked with no fire. I figured it was the spark plug, so I swapped it, nothing. Then I pulled the carb and cleaned it out, still nothing. Spent another hour chasing the stator and the CDI box because everyone on the old forums says those go bad on these machines. Turned out the whole problem was a loose ground wire behind the battery box, the bolt had backed out and it was just barely touching. Four hours of my Saturday gone because I skipped the one thing my dad always told me, check your grounds first before you touch anything else. The dumb part is I have done this exact same thing twice before on other rigs and I still go straight for the carb every single time. Now I keep a little wrench in the tool bag just for that ground bolt and I check it before every ride. Anybody else got a bad habit that keeps costing them a whole afternoon, or is it just me?
