Used to hate studded tracks in deep powder. A ride in the UP last January changed that.

I mean, I always figured studs were just for icy trails and hardpack, not for the fluffy stuff. Last winter I went up to the Keweenaw Peninsula with some guys from work and one of them had a new-to-him machine with a 1.5 inch studded track. We hit a fresh 18 inch dump and I figured he'd be stuck every 5 minutes. But he just kept climbing and carving way better than I could with my non-studded track. Something about the studs biting through the snow to the harder base underneath I guess? Now I'm saving up to get my own set for next season. Anyone else swap their opinion on a specific mod after actually riding with someone who had it?

Studs changed everything for me in off-trail riding too… night and day difference.

Oh man, I gotta disagree with you there. Studs never clicked for me off-trail. They turned my bike into a bucking bronco on every rock and root I hit, especially when the ground was mostly dry underneath. I tried a set of Gold Diggers once in the UP and spent more time picking myself off the ground than actually riding. Felt like I was riding on ball bearings every time I hit a hardpack section.
