A bodyshop owner in Austin made me question my whole sanding routine

I was picking up a used bumper from a shop off I-35 last month and the owner, Mike, watched me grab some 80 grit for a rough spot. He said I was burning through paper too fast because I was pushing down too hard, and he had me try just letting the DA's weight do the work on a test panel. Not gonna lie, it felt wrong at first but the finish came out way smoother and I used half the sheets on the next bumper. Has anyone else had a veteran call out their basic technique and found it actually saves time in the long run?
