A guy at the Portland swap meet said my clear coat was too thin
He pointed at a hood I'd just finished and said, 'You're spraying like it's single stage, man. Three medium coats minimum with a 10 minute flash time.' I started using a timer between coats on my SATAjet 4000 and the orange peel went way down. Anyone else get a simple tip that fixed a basic mistake?

That "spraying like it's single stage" comment hits home. I once put a whole gallon of clear on a fender trying to fix runs, because I was putting it on way too thick each pass. My mentor finally took the gun from me and said I was trying to drown the panel. Learning to trust the flash time and do more thin coats was a total game changer. It felt backwards at first, but it saves so much material and sanding work.

That's actually a great way to build up clear without runs.

Sounds like @umac71's mentor saved a whole forest from being turned into sandpaper.
