Call me crazy but I just started using a stud finder for dent repairs

Ngl I thought those magnetic body filler spreaders were a gimmick for years, but I picked one up at a swap meet for $8 last month and it actually lays mud way flatter than my old trowel. Has anyone else had a cheap tool surprise them like that?

Wait, you're telling me I've been going full Inspector Gadget with a magnet on a string like a CHUMP when there's an actual tool for this? I saw one of those spreaders on TikTok and figured it was just another way to separate idiots from their money. But now I'm kinda curious if it's worth digging through my junk drawer for that old refrigerator magnet I glued to a spatula.

Dude @robert_rodriguez66 I did the exact same thing with a neodymium magnet taped to a paint stirrer. Felt like a genius until I saw a real spreader at Harbor Freight and realized I'd been making it way harder than it needed to be.

Man you just made me reconsider my whole setup. I spent two weekends rigging up a magnetic spacer with washers and epoxy thinking I was some kind of shop wizard. Then my buddy let me borrow his real spreader from AutoZone and I just stood there feeling dumb for like five minutes straight. It's one of those things where the $15 tool actually saves you an hour of frustration and chipping dried glue off your workbench. Now I keep both in the garage but the cheap one gets way more use.
