Hit 1,000 panels on my paint gun and I still can't decide if that number even means anything
Cleaned out the gun cabinet yesterday and noticed the little counter thing I keep on my main spray gun read 1,000. That's panels, not jobs. Took about 7 years to get there. Now here's my thing. Half the older guys I know say a number like that is just noise, that a gun's life depends on how you clean it and what you spray, not some tally on a sticker. The other half swear you can feel a gun get tired around 800 to 1,200 panels, softer pattern, more fluid tip wear, more trash in the fan. I got quoted $340 to rebuild the whole thing and I am sitting on the fence. My last 20 jobs sprayed fine, or at least nobody brought one back. But I did notice the overlap getting a little splotchy on a silver Malibu two weeks ago at the body shop on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie. Could be the gun, could be me getting sloppy on a Friday. So which is it, do you trust the number or trust your hands?
could be the gun, could be me getting sloppy on a Friday" is the most honest thing I've read all week. $340 is cheap next to respraying a silver panel, and silver shows every flaw. Rebuild it and stop blaming your Friday self.
