Hot take: I switched from filler primer to high-build and it changed my door work

I used to always go with standard filler primer on door skins because that's what I learned. But after a job in March where I had to fix a 2015 Civic door with hail damage, the pin holes kept showing through after three coats. My guy on the crew kept saying try the high-build stuff but I resisted for over a year. Finally caved and bought a quart of Evercoat high-build primer and the difference was night and day. Took two coats to fill everything smooth and saved me about 2 hours of sanding. Has anyone else stuck with an old habit way too long before trying something better?

Man, "night and day" is exactly right. I was the same way with high-build, I thought it was just a gimmick for lazy people. Then I tried it on a textured door that was driving me nuts and I never went back. It's crazy how we'll stick with what we know even when something better is staring us in the face. The time you save alone makes it worth it, plus you get a better finish.

My buddy Dave swore by his old method forever... then he tried high-build on a bunch of old trim in his house. He said it was like magic how it filled all those tiny dents and scratches in one coat. @wendygrant you're right about time saved, he finished his whole living room in a weekend instead of a week.
