I finally tried wet sanding with a finer grit than usual on that old clear coat
Had a 2012 Ford Focus with some nasty orange peel and normally I stop at 2000 grit. Took it up to 3000 this time and the haze was way deeper than I expected before I even touched the compound. Anyone else find that going finer just means more buffing time or am I missing something?

Wait, so 3000 grit actually saves work in the long run? I always thought finer was just more elbow grease.

Heard some car detailer say that finer grits actually cut slower but leave a more uniform scratch pattern, which is why the haze looks deeper but buffs out cleaner with less micromarring. I tried 3000 on a buddy's old Civic and yeah it took forever with the compound but the final result was crazy slick compared to my usual 2000. Think the trade off is worth it if you've got time and a good rotary buffer.
