Just stopped by a shop in Bakersfield and saw something scary
I was grabbing supplies at a parts place near Bakersfield last Tuesday and peeked into the body shop next door. They were sanding down a 2018 Civic with no respirators on, just those cheap dust masks. I asked the guy about it and he said they've been doing it that way for 5 years, no issues. But I could see dust particles floating in the sunbeam from the window, and that stuff gets deep in your lungs. Has anyone else seen shops skipping proper PPE like that?

Ever wonder how many guys in that shop are gonna have breathing problems in ten years? That dust gets everywhere, and those paper masks are basically just for show.

Man I feel this. I used to work in a cabinet shop and thought the same thing til I got a bad cough that wouldn't go away for weeks. Bought myself a good half mask respirator with the proper filters and it made a huge difference. Even convinced a couple of the other guys to switch over too when they saw me not hacking up dust every night. Have you tried getting your employer to spring for better protection?
