My old boss in Cleveland swore by using a heat gun to soften old seam sealer before scraping it off

He said it would save me hours on prep work for quarter panel replacements. I tried it on a 1998 Ford Ranger last month and it worked like a charm, the stuff peeled right off without damaging the metal underneath. What other old school tricks have you guys found that actually hold up?

Oh that's a great one. I read an old body shop manual that suggested using a mixture of dish soap and water in a spray bottle to lubricate sanding discs on fresh primer. It sounds odd, but it really does keep the paper from loading up as fast. You just have to be careful not to soak the panel.

That soap trick reminds me, old timers used wet newspaper for final paint sanding to get a perfect finish.

Remember the first time I tried wet sanding with newspaper and just ended up with a soggy mess and ink all over my driveway. Had to explain to my neighbor why my car looked like it got into a fight with a printing press (not my finest moment). So yeah, the soap trick sounds way smarter than my approach.
