Old timer called out my weld-through primer technique

Mark, a 30 year frame guy at the shop, watched me primer a pinch weld and just shook his head. He said I was laying it on way too thick which makes the spot welds pop. Switched to a lighter mist coat and a quick blow with the gun, anyone else get called out for something you thought you had dialed in?

Mark's been doing this since before you were born probably, but I've seen plenty of guys call out the "right way" just to feel important. A thick coat of primer can hold moisture and cause pops, sure, but a light mist isn't gonna save you if your metal isn't prepped right. How bad were your test welds before he opened his mouth?

Finished a job last month where the guy swore by this high-end primer. Had bare metal prepped with a flap disc and acetone, still got porosity all over. Switched to a simple self etching rattle can and it laid down perfect. Prep work is everything, the primer is just along for the ride.
