Old timer told me to stop chasing the blend line, he was right for once

Been doing this 8 years and always tried to feather out my clear coat blends super far, like 12 to 14 inches. Last month at the shop in Tulsa, this retired guy who used to paint semis watched me sand one and just said "you're making more work for yourself, keep it tight, 3 inches max." I thought he was nuts because every YouTube video I watched said the opposite. But I tried it on a silver 2017 F150 with a rear quarter panel. Laid it down close, buffed it out, and you honestly could not see the cutoff even in direct sunlight. Now I'm wondering how many hours I wasted over the years doing the long blend thing. Anyone else get told to unlearn a habit from an old timer that actually worked, or is this just a silver paint thing and I should stick to long blends on darker colors like black or that deep red?
