Showerthought: I compared a $30 harbor freight sanding block to my old hand sanding method on a 2008 Camry quarter panel.

My 2005 Civic's door looked way better after I got a cheap sanding block from Ace. That hand sanding stuff was killing my fingers for no reason.

That "killing my fingers" part is why @elizabethwhite, a sanding block is a total game changer.

My first sanding block was literally just a piece of 2x4 I found in my dad's garage... didn't work great but it was better than nothing, haha. Actually got a proper one from Harbor Freight for like $3 and it made a huge difference on my old Ford's dash. @elizabethwhite is spot on about that cheap Ace block, I need to grab one for the next project. Still managed to sand a fingerprint off my thumb with the block though, which is pretty embarrassing. Guess I'm just cursed with clumsy hands no matter what tool I use.
