Showerthought: I thought plastic repair on bumper covers was a hack, then a guy in Decatur showed me his 6 year old welds still holding
Back in 2019 I told a customer I would not touch a cracked bumper cover unless we replaced it, because every plastic weld I had seen popped loose within a year. Watched a guy named Ray in Decatur melt a spider web of cracks on a 2016 Camry cover with a $40 airless plastic welder and stainless staples, and he pulled out photos of that same repair from 6 years back with no comebacks. Am I the only one who assumed plastic welding was a shortcut for guys who did not want to buy panels?
Was Ray using the stainless staples in a specific pattern or just running them across the crack wherever it went? Curious because the prep and staple layout is probably what separates a 6 year weld from one that pops in a season. Did he say anything about whether he V-grooved the crack first or just melted over the top?
