Stop using filler on deep dents without checking the backside first

I had a guy bring his '98 F-150 into my shop last week after three different places tried to fill a dent on his rear quarter panel. Nobody bothered to look behind the inner wheel well, and there was a 4 inch crack in the metal from an old rust spot. All that filler just cracked right out after 2 months, and he wasted $400 on fixes that failed. I've seen this exact mistake on at least 5 trucks this year alone. Has anyone else noticed shops skipping the backside check on quarter panels?

You know, I had a buddy who bought a used '05 Mustang, and the rear quarter had this big dent that the seller swore was already fixed. Three months later, the filler literally fell out in chunks when he was washing it, and inside the wheel well there was this whole cancer of rust that had spread from a tiny scrape. The shop that did the original work never pulled the inner liner, just piled on bondo, and the whole repair cost him a grand to redo properly.

Taking shortcuts always costs more in the long run, it's like the whole world forgot that. People slap a cheap fix on something and call it done, whether it's a car, a roof, or a relationship, and then act shocked when the real problem peeks out later. Your buddy's story is just the car version of paying for a band-aid when you needed stitches. The worst part is the original shop probably got paid and moved on, never having to face the mess they left behind. It's a pattern you see everywhere, quick fixes are never really quick and they're never really fixed. Honestly, I'd rather pay more upfront and know the job was done right than gamble on a surprise bill triple the size later.
