Unpopular opinion: I think we sand too much before primer
Last month in our shop in Dayton, I had to redo a quarter panel after the primer lifted. The tech before me feathered out a huge area, like 18 inches past the dent. My boss said to just scuff the factory paint with a gray pad and prime right over it, keeping the repair small. It stuck way better and saved us almost two hours. Has anyone else cut back on sanding and seen good results?

Scuff the factory paint" is a game changer, I was a huge feathering guy until I tried it.

Yeah, @grant826 is totally right about that. I used to just feather edges forever on factory jobs, but a light scuff with a grey pad over the whole repair area... it just makes the primer stick so much better. Stopped getting those weird halo lines around my blends. Now I won't even touch a panel without hitting it first.
