Why does nobody talk about the time a customer in Dayton tried to pay me with a bag of old coins for a fender repair last month?

I spent 45 minutes counting out $327 in mostly wheat pennies and buffalo nickels before the bank would even take them, so has anyone else gotten a truly weird form of payment?

Wendy's point about not running a pawn shop really hit me. I used to feel bad saying no to trades, but getting stuck with a broken snowblower for a tire job taught me the hard way. A clear policy just saves everyone the trouble.

That "bag of old coins" story is a classic. My advice is to just set a policy and stick to it. I tell people upfront I can only take cash, card, or a certified check for the exact amount. If someone shows up with a trunk full of scrap metal or a box of collectibles, I just point to the sign on the wall and say sorry, I can't run a pawn shop and a repair shop at the same time. It saves the headache of having to be the bad guy later.

Watched a buddy of mine try to be nice and accept a weird trade once. He ended up with three broken VCRs and a massive headache trying to get rid of them. Your policy idea is the only way to go.
