A customer called me out for skipping the final torque check on lug nuts

He came back a week after a brake job saying he heard a clicking sound, and when I checked, one lug was just finger tight. I now use my torque wrench on every single wheel, no exceptions, and mark them with chalk. How do you guys make sure you never miss a step on something so routine?

Sounds like a lot of fuss for a loose lug nut.

Oh man, my buddy's wheel actually came off on the highway once because of that. Cost him a fortune.

Wait, was it a loose lug nut or did the studs actually snap off? I've seen both happen and they're totally different problems. If the studs sheared, that's a different issue than just forgetting to tighten them down. Usually if a wheel comes off completely, it's because the nuts backed off over time or someone cross-threaded them. Your buddy probably heard a clicking noise for a while before it let go, right? Most people ignore that sound until it's too late.
