Talked to a fleet mechanic about scan tools and now I feel behind
Ran into an old buddy who runs a 40-truck fleet over in Fresno last week. He told me he ditched his $3,000 dealer scanner for a $250 Bluetooth dongle and a tablet app, and he catches stuff faster than I do on my high-end unit. Said the key was live data logging on every single drive, not just snapshot codes. I've been chasing a weird intermittent stumble on a 2018 F-150 for three days and he had me check fuel trims at idle versus cruise, found a dying MAF sensor in 20 minutes. Been in this trade 15 years and never thought to trust cheap tools for diagnostics. Anyone else switch from pricey scanners to the cheap route and surprised by the results?

$3,000 scanner tells you what it thinks, cheap one tells you what's actually happening... but good luck without the training.
