Talked to an old diesel mechanic about oil change intervals, made me rethink everything

I was helping a buddy swap out a timing chain on his 2005 Ford F-250 last Saturday, and his dad stopped by. The guy worked on big rigs for 40 years, retired now. He said most modern oil change recommendations are just marketing fluff and that we're changing oil way too often for normal driving. He showed me his old 1996 Cummins that only got fresh oil every 10,000 miles and still ran clean. It got me wondering, how often do you all actually change oil on your daily drivers? Has anyone else questioned the 5,000 mile rule?

Oh ABSOLUTELY, my grandpa ran his old Chevy on 10k intervals and that truck outlasted everything else on the road.
