Vent: A simple oil pressure fix took me 5 hours yesterday

I was working on a 2004 Silverado with a bad oil pressure reading. First I swapped the sending unit, no change. Then I checked the wiring all the way back to the ECM and found nothing wrong. Turns out the screen inside the oil pump pickup tube was clogged up with sludge. After 5 hours of chasing, a $6 part and some cleaner fixed it. Has anyone else spent way too long on a basic diagnosis like this?

and dont even get me started on that stupid screen. i had the exact same thing happen on my 06 2500 with the 6.0. spent like 4 hours chasing my tail thinking it was the gauge cluster or the ecm. swapped the sending unit twice even though the first one was brand new. finally blew the line out with compressed air and a pile of gunk came shooting out. felt like such a moron when a can of brake cleaner fixed it. now its like the first thing i check on those old gm trucks.
