When Dave decided his brake check couldn't wait for Monday

I was at a cookout last weekend, just trying to chill and enjoy some food. My friend Dave suddenly drags me to his car because his brakes were squeaking. Next thing, he has the car up on a jack in the middle of the driveway with everyone watching. I'm in my good clothes, kneeling on the concrete, trying to see if the pads are shot. People are standing around like it's a TV show, asking questions and making comments. It was so awkward because I just wanted to relax, not work for free. I found out it was just a loose shield, but I got dirt all over my pants. Now every time I see Dave, he expects me to check his car on the spot.

That dirt on your pants is why he'll always ask for help.

My cousin's garage flood last year taught me this. He had a broken pipe and called three people before me. They all said it was too messy. I showed up, got soaked, and fixed it. Now he calls me first for everything because he knows I won't back down from the dirt. That grime on your pants proves you're the one who actually shows up.

Wear these pants like a badge of honor after helping my neighbor fix his sink. Saw your comment, @shah.ben, and honestly you're not wrong. This grime is from actually knowing how to unclog a drain when he asked. I figure if a little dirt is the price for being useful, I'll take it. Guess I'm just the person you call when the job is going to be messy.

So what's the worst mess you've ever gotten into helping someone?
