Chose a $90 Chinese crimper over the $400 Daniels kit back in 2019, still not sure I won
When I started out at a shop near DFW, the lead tech pushed me to buy the full Daniels DMC kit, but I went with a $90 knockoff crimper from Aircaft Spruce instead since I was broke. It got me through two years of harness work fine, but the die set wore out fast and I had to redo a pitot harness on a 172 twice because of it. These days I keep the cheap one as a backup and finally sprung for the real deal. Anyone else still running bargain tools or did you all bite the bullet early?
Man, I gotta push back on that a little! Wore out dies definitely cost you, no question there, but the rework time thing gets blown way out of proportion in my book. Half the guys I know running cheap dies never track their rework hours, they just complain about it and keep buying the same junk. If it was really eating them alive like people say, they would've switched years ago, right? Plus a lot of so called wore out dies just need a quick touch up and they run fine again. I've seen guys get plenty of good parts out of dies everyone told them were dead. Feels like the whole thing is more of a scare tactic than a real money problem for most shops.
