A PCT thru-hiker told me to skip the Sierra snow gear and go ultralight, I listened and got stuck at Forester Pass for 3 days
My buddy Dave who summited last year swore the snowpack was mild and I'd be fine with microspikes and an ice axe, but then I hit a sheer ice chute near Forester Pass that took me 8 hours to cross with someone else's rope and now I'm wondering if traditional cautious packing is smarter than trusting recent beta, has anyone else had a fast-and-light plan backfire on a high route?

Oh man, nothing like getting some "expert" advice that leaves you hugging a sheer ice wall for 8 hours. Hope that guy bought you a beer after you got out.

Eh, I dunno, sometimes you learn more from the sketchy routes than the easy ones.
