A ranger at Zion told me my route plan was backwards, and it saved my whole trip
I mapped out a 3 day loop through the Zion Narrows and thought I had it all figured out, going downstream first to hit the popular section while I was fresh. A backcountry ranger at the visitor center looked at my permit and said flat out, you're doing this backwards, the water levels drop by afternoon and you'll be fighting current the whole second day. I was kinda annoyed because I'd planned it for weeks, but I switched the direction and started upstream instead. Day one was harder than I expected but day two was way easier with the current pushing me along, and I actually had energy left to enjoy the side canyons instead of just surviving. The ranger also said most people overpack for the Narrows and I cut my food down from 4 days worth to 2.5, which made a huge difference on the slickrock sections. I finished the loop feeling good instead of wrecked, and honestly that one piece of feedback changed how I plan every route now. Has anyone else had a ranger or trail angel give you advice that completely flipped your plan?
