My backpack snapped a strap two days in on the Pacific Crest Trail near Donner Pass

Had to jerry-rig it with paracord and a carabiner for the next 80 miles. Anyone else had a piece of gear totally fail mid-route and how did you MacGyver it?

Ha, paracord and a carabiner are basically the official gear of the long distance hiker at that point. I'd say you upgraded your pack to a more "custom" look than whatever the manufacturer intended. At least you didn't have to carry a separate piece of duct tape wrapped around your Nalgene for that emergency too.

Did you try stitching it with dental floss too? I had a tent pole snap on me in the Sierras once. Wrapped the break in duct tape and splinted it with a stick and that thing held for like 200 miles. Sometimes the bush fixes work better than the real stuff.
