My sister's take on 'getting lost' in the Tetons changed my whole approach

We were looking at my planned route for the Teton Crest Trail and she said, 'Your map is just a list of places you're not allowed to go.' I realized I'd been so focused on sticking to the line that I was missing the point. Anyone else have a moment that flipped your trip planning from rigid to flexible?

Wrecking a fragile place" seems a bit much. Most people just step off trail to take a photo, not start a landslide.

Honestly, I'm the opposite. That map line is what keeps me safe and stops me from wrecking a fragile place. Getting truly lost isn't some fun adventure, it's dangerous and irresponsible. I'll stick to my planned route.

That's a good point from your sister. I try to find a middle ground, like @harris.eric said, without going too far off track. My own sense of direction is so bad that getting lost would just be annoying.
