Ran into a guy on the Pacific Crest who changed my whole water strategy
He told me to stop carrying 6 liters through the desert and just trust the caches... I thought he was crazy until I hit mile 50 with a lighter pack. Has anyone else had a total stranger's advice completely flip your route planning?

It really is wild how one piece of advice from a stranger can just click. I had a similar moment on the AT when a guy told me to ditch my heavy camp shoes and just use my hiking socks around camp. It sounded so wrong at first, but then I tried it one night and my feet were so much happier without that extra weight in my pack. Now I never carry camp shoes and I think of that guy every time I want to take them. There's something about hearing it from someone who's actually out there doing it that makes it stick.
